Sint is coming to Town

In the day and age where the news is flooded with stories of abuse of children by priests of the Catholic church it seems that nothing is sacred or safe anymore, not even the patron saint of all children: Saint Nicolas.

Dick Maas, a dutch movie maker is working on a horror movie called “Sint” (Saint), which is scheduled to be released in the last quarter of 2010.

For the non-dutch types a short introduction. Aside from being an historical figure, Saint Nicolas or Sinterklaas (Sint for short) is also a winter holiday figure like Santa Claus. In fact (Santa Claus was based on Sinterklaas.

The movie portrays a Sint, which is nothing like the children’s friend. St. Niklas, played by Huub Stapel (De Lift, Amsterdamned), is a saint fallen from grace, who roams and pillages on the country side and ends up being killed by villages. The blood-thirsty ‘saint’ makes an oath of vengeance. After centuries have past the Sint returns to exact his vengeance on teens.

To some the theme and timing (around the celebration of Saint Nicolas) might seem in poor taste. In an interview, Dick Maas expressed he felt this was the right time to make this movie: “There’s a lot of sex abuse scandals surrounding the Roman Catholic church. Everyone trusts them and puts their children on their lap, while in the mean time something horrific lurks underneath”.
It’s also not the first movie based on a good figure. In 2005 a movie named Santa’s Slay hit the theatres with a similar theme.

Whether the movie will be any good remains to be seen, but it sounds like something with potential; if it’s a true horror I will probably laugh my ass off.  What I do know that I love the artwork, which was recently published.
